Madison County man charged with forgery and false pretense

RALEIGH
May 1, 2024

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Whitley Danielson Owensby, 28, of 2473 Paint Fork Road, Mars Hill, NC. Owensby was charged with one count of common law forgery and one count of obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Owensby attempted to deposit a two-party check into his Bank of America Business Account in the amount of $40,296.19 without the consent of the second party named on the check, Debourg Logisitics.

According to the arrest warrant, the offense occurred on Dec. 24, 2021.

Freeman was released from custody under a $10,000 secured bond and ordered to appear in Madison County Courthouse on May 7.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
