As the nation honors volunteer service, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is recognizing the SHIIP volunteers across North Carolina who help our senior citizens with Medicare.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey reminds Medicare beneficiaries that it’s time to compare and evaluate their current plans and make necessary changes during the annual Open Enrollment Period.
“Medicare plans change from year to year and so do your healthcare needs,” Commissioner Causey said. “A plan that has worked for you this year may not be the best choice for 2026. I encourage you to contact a Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselor during this year’s Open Enrollment Period so you can get expert advice for meeting your healthcare needs for next year.”

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Medicare beneficiaries impacted by Hurricane Helene have been granted an extended Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to sign up for Medicare health and prescription drug coverage.
This extended period gives beneficiaries extra time to make changes to their Medicare coverage due to the unforeseen circumstances that accompany a natural disaster.

North Carolina now has more than 2.1 million Medicare beneficiaries. National Volunteer Week runs from April 21-27.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, remind seniors who have Medicare Advantage plans to review their coverage and make changes to their plans during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period in North Carolina, which runs from Jan. 1, 2024, to March 31, 2024.
“Our health can change significantly in a very short period of time,” Commissioner Causey said. “If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, now is the right time to make sure you have the plan that best meets your needs.”

“These savings are valuable to older North Carolinians, many of whom are on a fixed income,” Commissioner Causey said. “Now they can use them to spend as they see fit."
