North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Quincy Quaime Duff, 32, of 790 Maxton Bass Road, Newton Grove, NC. Duff was charged with issuing a false statement, attempting to obtain property by false pretense and common law forgery. All are felonies.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Whitley Danielson Owensby, 28, of 2473 Paint Fork Road, Mars Hill, NC. Owensby was charged with one count of common law forgery and one count of obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies. 

According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Owensby attempted to deposit a two-party check into his Bank of America Business Account in the amount of $40,296.19 without the consent of the second party named on the check, Debourg Logisitics. 

North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance Mike Causey is recognizing SHIIP volunteers during National Volunteer Week for the valuable role they play in advancing the mission of NC SHIIP.

North Carolina now has more than 2.1 million Medicare beneficiaries. National Volunteer Week runs from April 21-27.

"Without our remarkable, selfless volunteers, SHIIP would not be able to help so many Medicare beneficiaries in our state," Commissioner Causey added. "I'm very grateful for their continued service to their fellow North Carolinians."

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Julius Darnell Kelly, 50, of Wilson, and Virginia Jones Maddox, 57, of 812 Belmont Ave. SW, Wilson. Kelly was charged with four counts of identity theft, two counts of insurance fraud, two counts of obtaining property by false pretense, one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, one count of forgery and two counts of title application fraud, all felonies. Maddox was charged with three counts of felony notary fraud. 

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Terrance Antoine Hunter, 40, of 13505 Bryton Gap Blvd., Huntersville, and Tracie Michelle Famber, 59, of 1220 Echo Glen Road, Charlotte. They were both charged with one count of embezzlement, a felony.

Special agents from the North Carolina Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division accuse Hunter and Famber, a contractor and adjuster, of embezzling homeowners’ premium payments in the amount of $20,662.95 from one client.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Charles Earl Holden, 38, of 704 Maury St. Wilson. Holden was charged with insurance fraud, a felony.

According to special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Holden attempted to defraud Integon National by claiming that damages to his vehicle were caused by a collision with wildlife, when in fact the damages were related to a fatal hit and run that had previously occurred on Feb. 10, 2023.

North Carolina Department of Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will present the Commissioner’s Award to a junior firefighter who has earned his Eagle Scout badge during a special ceremony on Saturday, April 13. 

The award will be presented to Landon Whitman at 4 p.m. during a court of honor of Boy Scout Troop 19 scheduled at the Benson Fire Department, 313 South Elm Street, Benson, NC. 

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of De’Arias Raequez Pitt, 25, of 615 Pine Drive, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Pitt is charged with one count of larceny of a motor vehicle and one count of obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Pitt presented falsified Navy Federal Credit Union loan documents to obtain a 2020 Dodge Charger, valued at $50,000, from another person.

North Carolina Insurance companies have filed a request with the N.C. Department of insurance to increase insurance rates for mobile home policies.

The North Carolina Rate Bureau, which represents insurance companies and is not a part of the Department of Insurance, has requested an overall state average increase of 82.9% for mobile home fire policies (MH-F) over a three-year period.  The insurance companies have requested an overall state average increase of 49.9% for mobile home casualty policies (MH-C) over a three-year period.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announces today that the state of North Carolina is now the third largest domicile for captive insurance companies in the U.S., trailing only Vermont and Utah.

A captive insurance company is a type of self-insurance that businesses use to manage their own risks. A ‘domicile’ is the country, state or territory that licenses a captive insurer and has primary regulatory oversight over that insurer. The captive's primary jurisdiction, be it a state, territory or other jurisdiction, is known as its “domicile”.
