North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Joshua Wade Bethea, 41, of 5006 Endolwood Road, Charlotte, and Stephanie Marcia Bonitto, 36, 1804 Prospect Drive, Charlotte. Both were charged one count each of insurance fraud, obtaining property under false pretense, and common law uttering. The charges stem from an automobile insurance claim following a car crash involving both individuals. 

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Myers Theodore Thomas Jr., 30, of 3802 Kalispell Lane, Charlotte. Thomas was charged with three counts of insurance fraud and three counts of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, all felonies. 

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Jacqueline Elaine Hill, 52, of 12915 Deaton Hill Drive, Charlotte. Hill was charged with one count of insurance fraud and one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies. 

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today issued the following statement on the 12-year sentence given Greg Lindberg in federal court:

“The 12-year prison sentence and $1.6 billion in restitution reflects the seriousness of Greg Lindberg’s crimes and the harm he caused to policyholders.  This sends a powerful message to anyone who would consider engaging in fraud involving insurance companies that crime doesn't pay.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will speak to the North Carolina Association of Floodplain Managers annual conference on Tuesday, May 5, at 10:30 a.m. in Atlantic Beach.  He will later present fire service awards at a ceremony at noon in Morehead City.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that he has appointed Jessica Price as senior deputy commissioner of the Company Services Group at the Department of Insurance.

The Company Services Group includes the Department’s Financial Analysis Division, Financial Examination Division, and Financial Oversight and Special Entities Division.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that the N.C. Department of Insurance has settled a dwelling rate case with North Carolina insurance companies.

Commissioner Causey negotiated an average statewide increase of 5% per year over the next two years. 

The N.C. Rate Bureau, which is not a part of the N.C. Department of Insurance and represents property and casualty insurance companies writing premiums in North Carolina, had requested a statewide overall increase of 68.3% over a two-year period. The Rate Bureau filed its requested increase on Oct. 30, 2025.

As the nation honors volunteer service, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is recognizing the SHIIP volunteers across North Carolina who help our senior citizens with Medicare. 

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey joined other traffic safety advocates Tuesday afternoon to highlight the dangers of distracted driving at a news conference at Pearl Street Park in Charlotte. 

“You might think glancing at your phone for a few seconds isn’t a big deal while driving, but those few seconds can lead to a lifetime of consequences,” Commissioner Causey said.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has rescheduled the hearing for the insurance industry’s proposed statewide average 68.3% dwelling insurance rate increase to July 6. The hearing had been scheduled for May 4.

“The Department of Insurance and the N.C. Rate Bureau have made progress in reaching a settlement,” Commissioner Causey said. “More time is needed to work out the details of a settlement.”
