After an EF-1 tornado ravaged parts of Garner, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is urging the state’s consumers to check with their insurance agent to review their policies and make sure they are covered from the effects of natural disasters.

The tornado touched down last Sunday in Garner uprooting trees and damaging homes and cars while carrying top wind speeds of 110 miles per hour.

The town of Garner reported more than 20 homes were damaged after Sunday's storm. Four of those homes are now uninhabitable.

The holiday season is here, a time to enjoy spending time with family and friends and decking the halls with beautiful Christmas decorations. 

To make sure your family has fun and stays safe this Christmas, Chief State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor and Office of State Fire Marshal staff along with Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, will host a live Christmas tree fire demonstration on Friday, Dec. 8. The goal is to reinforce home fire safety efforts during the holiday season by showing just how quickly a dry Christmas tree can burn and spread flames throughout a room.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey sounded the alarm to North Carolina Medicare and health insurance consumers as the end of the open enrollment period nears for both Medicare and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) programs.

“We are getting numerous complaints from ACA consumers across the state who believe their plan was changed without their authorization,” Commissioner Causey said. “As for Medicare beneficiaries, we are getting reports that they have been billed for equipment and supplies they never ordered.”

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will honor Fire Chief Robert Louis with a Commissioner’s Award during a special presentation in Mebane on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will present the award to Chief Louis for over 30 years of service.

Louis has been a part of Mebane’s Fire Department since 1993, when he joined as a volunteer, and he became Mebane’s first career fire chief in 2000. He will retire on Dec. 31.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is proud to announce that NCDOI’s Chief Deputy Commissioner Jackie Obusek was awarded the Robert Dineen award at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Fall Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

This award, named in honor of the founder of NAIC's Support and Services Office, recognizes regulators for outstanding service and contributions to state insurance regulation.

Commissioner Causey nominated Obusek for her outstanding service and leadership.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced that Shimecca Montrese McCall, 28, of 2203 Broad Drive, Florence, SC has been charged with insurance fraud, a felony.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of William Ryan Chesson, 27, of 398 Frisco Dr., Holly Ridge. Chesson was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Deandre Niko Holmes, 28, of 2000 Woodhaven Drive, Albemarle. Holmes was charged with identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Holmes of using another man’s Social Security card and driver’s license to obtain renters’ insurance from State Farm Fire and Casualty Co.   

According to the arrest warrant, the offense occurred on March 13.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Christy Shemika Joyce, 47, of 1571 Lovett St., Greensboro, NC. Joyce was charged with one count of insurance fraud and one count of obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will honor the heroic actions of Michael Taylor during a special Save Award presentation in Randleman, NC at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28.

The Save Award honors Taylor for his acts of heroism in response to vehicle accident and fire on Sept. 4.

Taylor, a civilian, responded on foot to the scene where a vehicle had crashed into power lines and caught fire. Taylor safely navigated his way around downed live power lines to safely pull the driver from the vehicle until emergency personnel arrived.
