North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Brandy Gail Childers, 39, of 709 Daniels Lumber Road, Taylorsville, was charged with insurance fraud, a felony.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Childers of falsely telling Progressive Premier Insurance Co. of Illinois that damage to the bumpers, tailgate and frame of her 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan occurred when a truck backed into her van at a Walmart parking lot, pushing it into another truck.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Rickey Levar Bobo, 43, of 118 Rock Drive, Mount Gilead. Bobo is charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Bobo of obtaining a renters’ insurance claim payment from Travelers Insurance for damaged property by providing false documents and photos to support the claim.

For the third time in the past eight months, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is warning residents to be on alert for insurance scams.

Recently, NCDOI has received a new report of scam artists going door-to-door claiming to be from the N.C. Department of Insurance. 

During the visit, the two NCDOI impostors demanded to speak with the homeowner but would not provide their names, show identification or state the reason for their visit.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey on Wednesday will honor firefighters and first responders who helped rescue a 14-year-old boy from a fire in Iredell County in September 2020.

Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will present ceremonial grant checks to rescue squads in Catawba and Iredell counties during the day.

Eight firefighters and 911 dispatchers who teamed up to help save the teenage boy from a fire will receive SAVE Awards, which go to people who go above and beyond the call of duty.

As April winds down, so does Distracted Driving Awareness Month. It is my hope that the emphasis we’ve placed on getting drivers to avoid distractions and keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel will be something they remember every time they get in the driver’s seat.

As your insurance commissioner, I want to do everything I can to keep tragedies caused by distracted driving from happening as much as possible. This also holds down automobile insurance rates.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office drug take-back event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Commissioner Causey and Sheriff Whisenant will be available to the media at 11 a.m.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office drug take-back event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Commissioner Causey and Sheriff Shaw will be available to the media at 11 a.m.

The N.C. Department of Insurance has ended its legal dispute with the North Carolina Rate Bureau on its proposed 18.7% dwelling insurance rate increase, averting a potentially costly administrative battle with insurance companies.  This means the hearing scheduled for Jan. 18, 2022 is canceled.
