North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has set Sept. 20, 2021, as the hearing date for the North Carolina Rate Bureau’s proposed 24.5% homeowners’ insurance rate increase.

“The data in the filing has not convinced me that such a drastic increase is necessary,” said Commissioner Causey. “My goal is to find a rate that will make financial sense for our residents and keep our insurance companies healthy enough to pay claims.”

The hearing will begin at 10 a.m. in the Second Floor Hearing Room in the Albemarle Building, 325 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Cynthia Lee Collins, 55, of 355 Parker Road, New Bern. Collins is charged with six counts of insurance fraud and six counts of obtaining property by false pretense, all felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Collins of obtaining $2,601.25 from Aflac for medical visits that did not occur.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Alonzo Darrell James, 39, of 529 Webbs Gate Road, Henrico. James was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse James of filing a claim with Progressive Premier Insurance Co. of Illinois, knowing that damage to his 2012 Nissan Maxima occurred before he purchased the policy in an attempt to obtain $2,765.15 from the company.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will honor 10-year-old Brayden Connor and his neighbor, Antonio Bickems, for their quick, life-saving action during a home fire in the Catawba County town of Claremont earlier this month.

Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will present Heroism Awards to the two at the Claremont Fire Department on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m.

Young Brayden woke up on Dec. 4 to find that the kitchen in his home was on fire. He remained calm as his mother became disoriented by the fire.

The North Carolina Department of Insurance received a rate filing Monday, Dec. 14, from the North Carolina Rate Bureau requesting an 18.7% statewide average increase in dwelling policies to be effective Sept. 1, 2021.

The NCRB, which is not part of the Department of Insurance, represents all companies writing property insurance in the state.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Brittany Tyeshia Gibbs, 31, of 6305 Flower Field Lane, Raleigh. Gibbs was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Gibbs of telling Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. that she and her son were injured in an automobile crash in an attempt to obtain money from the insurance company when the two were not in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that two Winston-Salem residents stand accused of staging an automobile accident in an attempt to obtain money from a fraudulent insurance claim.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division served criminal summonses on Reginald Lamon Jones, 54, and Sirena Yvette Simmons, 45, both of 2405 Markwood Lane, Winston-Salem. Both were charged with felony insurance fraud. Jones was also charged with attempting to obtain property by false pretense, also a felony.

In recognition of Winter Weather Preparedness Week, which runs from Dec. 6-12 in North Carolina, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, urges families to make preparations now for potentially dangerous weather this winter.

“Winter is a time that brings families together in celebration of the holidays. But that also means more cooking, more traveling and more risk of fire and other accidents,” said Commissioner Causey. “This winter, it is so important for families to keep safety in mind.”

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Laykeysha Chesson, 23, of 112 Sawmill Circle, Plymouth. Chesson was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Chesson of falsely telling National General Insurance that her vehicle was stolen and then wrecked in an attempt to obtain $16,873.01 from the insurance company.

The offenses occurred between May 27 and Nov. 13.
