Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has joined Governor Highway Safety Director Mark Ezzell in a news conference to remind motorists of the importance of the state’s Move Over Law.

The law requires motorists on multi-lane highways to move over one lane when approaching emergency response or maintenance vehicles stopped with lights flashing.  It also requires motorists on a two-lane highway to slow down until they safely pass the emergency responder.  The law’s goal is to create a greater margin of safety for public officials who have stopped on the side of the road.

The Safe Kids N.C. team is partnering with law enforcement agencies and first responders to ensure children are secured in a properly installed child safety seat when riding in a vehicle to save lives.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will meet with firefighters and distribute grant checks to fire departments while in Watauga and Wilkes counties on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Seven Watauga County fire departments have received matching grants totaling $171,426 from the state. Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will present ceremonial checks to the departments during the visit. The Beaver Dam, Deep Gap, Meat Camp, Seven Devils, Shawneehaw, Beech Mountain and Zionville volunteer fire departments have received the matching grants.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Stephanie Renee Norman, 38, of 10700 Point South Drive, Charlotte, was charged with felony insurance fraud.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Norman of filing a false auto insurance claim with Southern General Insurance Co., saying her 2007 Chevrolet had been stolen when it had been involved in a crash.

The offense occurred on May 2.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Timothy Darnell Montague Jr. and Akira Veneta Montague, both 22, and both of 7821 Bergstrom Drive, Raleigh. Both were charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations division accuse the Montagues of providing false documents for items reported stolen in an attempt to obtain $3,060.97 in rental insurance claim payments from American National Insurance Co.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Kenneth Dean Alexander Cooper, 46, of 2109 Pelham Road, Raleigh. Cooper was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Cooper of attempting to obtain payments from Sentry Insurance Co. by falsely claiming he was injured in an automobile collision.

The offenses occurred between Sept. 16, 2019, and Aug. 11, 2020.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will present checks to assist rural volunteer fire departments in Warren and Gates counties on Monday, Aug. 31. He will also meet with insurance agents during lunch in Halifax County.

Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, is concerned about the financial well-being of the state’s volunteer fire departments. He has partnered with the state’s largest health insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, to obtain grants to help ensure the departments can respond to their jurisdiction’s needs.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has announced the 2020 winners of the Seniors Health Insurance Information Program’s (SHIIP) statewide and regional awards for their outstanding work in providing free, unbiased counseling about Medicare and other health insurance issues to seniors in North Carolina.

SHIIP is a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance that offers free, objective information about Medicare, Medicare prescription drug coverage, Medicare Advantage, long-term care insurance and other health insurance issues.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey plans to drop by insurance agencies, visit several fire stations and deliver grant checks to departments in need during visits to Randolph and Moore counties on Thursday, Aug. 27.

While meeting with insurance agents, Commissioner Causey will listen to agents’ concerns and discuss his efforts to modernize the insurance industry in the state and make the department more consumer friendly.

Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey will be in Guilford County Tuesday, Aug. 25 to observe a firefighting training exercise that ensures firefighters have ready access to water in neighborhoods that do not have a fire hydrant. This training will take place in an undeveloped area near the Grandover neighborhood off of Post Bridge Drive and Tramore Drive.

The Commissioner will also deliver a grant check to a volunteer fire department in need of funds.
