North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey is proud to announce that Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina has donated $500,000 to assist rural volunteer fire departments as part of their Rural NC Initiative for 2020.

This grant money was deposited in the nonprofit North Carolina Firefighters Fund.

The N.C. Department of Insurance’s Office of State Fire Marshal, in cooperation with the N.C. State Firefighters Association and N.C. Firefighters Fund, will distribute this grant money to 94 departments in 36 rural counties.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Charmyne Altrease Bull, 32, of 5801 Nottoway Court, Raleigh. Bull was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Bull of receiving $7,457.28 from a USAA Insurance Co. renters’ insurance claim by providing false documents for proof of loss.

The offenses occurred between April 14, 2019, and April 2, 2020.

With the 2020 hurricane season in full swing, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey urges all North Carolinians to prepare for the potential of extreme weather during the coming months.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to Nov. 30. Weather experts predict an above normal hurricane season for 2020.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that the former treasurer of a Cherokee County volunteer fire department and her husband were charged with felony obtaining property by false pretense.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey thanked the more than 900 Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) volunteers who counsel Medicare recipients and help them save money on their premiums and copayments.

Commissioner Causey used National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 19-25, as an opportunity to extend his gratitude to the volunteers.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is working with insurance companies so they can provide financial assistance to consumers during the COVID-19 health emergency. Many automobile insurers are announcing rebates and discounts due to the “Stay at Home” order, but, by law, rebates are not allowed in North Carolina and discounts must be filed in advance with the Department for approval.  As an alternative, the Commissioner has developed a filing mechanism that will quickly allow companies to legally offer discounts to help their policyholders.
