Greensboro woman charged with insurance fraud

RALEIGH
Mar 14, 2023

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Robin Teara Lawson, 33, of 19 Laurel Lee Terrace Apartment B, Greensboro. Lawson was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Lawson of obtaining $24,599.11 from State Farm Insurance Co. by falsely reporting a fire that did not occur.

According to the arrest warrant, Lawson filed a claim on her renters’ insurance policy using forged documents to receive the money.

The offenses occurred between Feb. 23, 2020, and June 16, 2021.

Greensboro police arrested Lawson on Feb 28. She was given a $2,500 secured bond and is due in Guilford County District Court on March 20.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840.
