Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey confirmed that agents from the Criminal Investigations Division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance are assisting in the investigation of this morning’s deadly fire in Durham.

According to news reports, a firefighter died and at least two others were hurt battling a large fire in a building in the 400 block of Marly Drive in Durham. Department of Insurance special agents remained on the scene Thursday morning.

Commissioner Causey offered his deepest sympathies to the firefighters’ families. “Firefighters risk their lives everyday to protect us and this terrible tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers of first responder jobs,” Commissioner Causey said. “Our team of sworn agents will do anything needed to help the State Bureau of Investigation, the Durham Sheriff’s Office, Durham Fire Department, and other agencies in this investigation.”
