Commissioner Causey reminds North Carolinians to prepare for weekend storm

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey urges all North Carolinians to stay alert as the state likely faces impacts from Hurricane Isaias.

According to the National Hurricane Center, states including Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee could see serious storm damage after Isaias makes landfall Friday night along the northern Gulf coast, then tracks north. While North Carolina isn’t currently in the direct path of the storm, meteorologists predict bands of rain across the state this weekend, with four to six inches possible on our coast and in areas near the Tennessee border. The system could also produce tornadoes.

Commissioner Causey encourages everyone across North Carolina to pay attention and prepare. “Don’t let your guard down. Take all warnings seriously and look out for your family and neighbors. Our hearts go out to states in the direct path of Isaias.”

The commissioner recommends:

  • Stay tuned to local TV/radio news for the latest weather updates and instructions.
  • Make sure you have a safe place to go if severe weather approaches, like a small interior room in your home.
  • Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, plants, etc.
  • Park vehicles away from tree limbs and where water can rise.
  • Don’t drive on flooded streets or roads. Turn around, don’t drown.
  • Beware of contractor and roofing representatives going door-to-door after a storm. Deal only with licensed contractors and get several estimates. Never sign a blank contract for repairs.
  • Consider flood insurance before the next storm. It’s too late to buy coverage now because flood policies are not available once a named storm approaches. Once the weather clears, investigate additional coverage. Standard homeowners’ policies don’t cover flood damage.
  • Make sure you understand your coverages in your insurance policy. If you’re unsure, now (before the storm hits) is the time to call your agent.
