North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Terrance Antoine Hunter, 40, of 13505 Bryton Gap Blvd., Huntersville, and Tracie Michelle Famber, 59, of 1220 Echo Glen Road, Charlotte. They were both charged with one count of embezzlement, a felony.

Special agents from the North Carolina Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division accuse Hunter and Famber, a contractor and adjuster, of embezzling homeowners’ premium payments in the amount of $20,662.95 from one client.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Charles Earl Holden, 38, of 704 Maury St. Wilson. Holden was charged with insurance fraud, a felony.

According to special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Holden attempted to defraud Integon National by claiming that damages to his vehicle were caused by a collision with wildlife, when in fact the damages were related to a fatal hit and run that had previously occurred on Feb. 10, 2023.

North Carolina Department of Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will present the Commissioner’s Award to a junior firefighter who has earned his Eagle Scout badge during a special ceremony on Saturday, April 13. 

The award will be presented to Landon Whitman at 4 p.m. during a court of honor of Boy Scout Troop 19 scheduled at the Benson Fire Department, 313 South Elm Street, Benson, NC. 

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of De’Arias Raequez Pitt, 25, of 615 Pine Drive, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Pitt is charged with one count of larceny of a motor vehicle and one count of obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Pitt presented falsified Navy Federal Credit Union loan documents to obtain a 2020 Dodge Charger, valued at $50,000, from another person.

North Carolina Insurance companies have filed a request with the N.C. Department of insurance to increase insurance rates for mobile home policies.

The North Carolina Rate Bureau, which represents insurance companies and is not a part of the Department of Insurance, has requested an overall state average increase of 82.9% for mobile home fire policies (MH-F) over a three-year period.  The insurance companies have requested an overall state average increase of 49.9% for mobile home casualty policies (MH-C) over a three-year period.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announces today that the state of North Carolina is now the third largest domicile for captive insurance companies in the U.S., trailing only Vermont and Utah.

A captive insurance company is a type of self-insurance that businesses use to manage their own risks. A ‘domicile’ is the country, state or territory that licenses a captive insurer and has primary regulatory oversight over that insurer. The captive's primary jurisdiction, be it a state, territory or other jurisdiction, is known as its “domicile”.

North Carolina Department of Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will present the Century Award to Faw Insurance during a special presentation on Wednesday, April 10.

The Commissioner presents this award to those within the industry who have operated for at least 100 years. 

The award will be presented during the Wilkes County Chamber of Commerce’s event celebrating the company’s achievement, which is scheduled for 10 a.m.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that a Currituck County fire department employee has been charged with embezzling more than $200,000 from the department.

Amanda Christine Lamb, 46, of 637 N. Sandy Hook Road, Shawboro, was charged with embezzlement of funds by a public officer. Lamb was employed by the fire department as an administrative assistant, not by the county government.

A pair of recent rumblings in North Carolina have led Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey to remind the state’s residents to make sure they are covered from the impacts of natural disasters. This can be achieved by checking in with their insurance agent to review their individual policies.

Over Easter weekend, two small earthquakes were felt in Surry County -- both within a few miles of each other. According to the United State Geological Survey (USGS), the first was a 2.3 magnitude earthquake that hit about 20 miles west of Mount Airy. The second earthquake was a 1.5 magnitude.
