North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Debbie Hogan Steele, 59, of 729 Craige St., Salisbury, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Steele of attempting to obtain payment from National General Insurance Co. for an auto damage claim in a hit and run that had previously been reported in 2018.

The offenses occurred between March 9-11.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will visit New Hanover county Thursday, Sept. 17 to discuss how communities can efficiently recover after storms and fires damage homes and buildings.

With Hurricane Sally making landfall this morning and four other named storms brewing in the Atlantic Ocean, Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, wants residents to be adequately prepared to protect their families and investments before, during and after a storm hits the region.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of a Cornelius man who operated a debt collection business without being licensed in the state.

Gordon Scott Engle, 56, of 16424 Green Dolphin Lane, Cornelius, was charged with 81 felony counts of failing to secure a permit from the Commissioner of Insurance.  The N.C. Department of Insurance regulates and licenses debt collection businesses in North Carolina.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Jhueate Elijah Andrews, 19, of 2311 Portola Court, Charlotte, was charged with insurance fraud, a felony.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Andrews of telling Nationwide Insurance Co. of America, in an auto insurance claim, that damage to his vehicle occurred during a hit and run when the damage occurred much earlier, before he bought the vehicle.

The offense occurred on June 22.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, who also serves as the Chair of Safe Kids N.C., is partnering with law enforcement agencies and first responders to ensure children are secured in a properly installed child safety seat when riding in a vehicle to save lives.

Families that have been affected by Covid-19 and cannot afford a child seat can come to the clinic with their child to receive a free car seat and have it installed by a National Certified Child Safety Seat Technician. Child safety seats are limited to 50 seats for this event.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has joined Governor Highway Safety Director Mark Ezzell in a news conference to remind motorists of the importance of the state’s Move Over Law.

The law requires motorists on multi-lane highways to move over one lane when approaching emergency response or maintenance vehicles stopped with lights flashing.  It also requires motorists on a two-lane highway to slow down until they safely pass the emergency responder.  The law’s goal is to create a greater margin of safety for public officials who have stopped on the side of the road.

The Safe Kids N.C. team is partnering with law enforcement agencies and first responders to ensure children are secured in a properly installed child safety seat when riding in a vehicle to save lives.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will meet with firefighters and distribute grant checks to fire departments while in Watauga and Wilkes counties on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Seven Watauga County fire departments have received matching grants totaling $171,426 from the state. Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will present ceremonial checks to the departments during the visit. The Beaver Dam, Deep Gap, Meat Camp, Seven Devils, Shawneehaw, Beech Mountain and Zionville volunteer fire departments have received the matching grants.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Stephanie Renee Norman, 38, of 10700 Point South Drive, Charlotte, was charged with felony insurance fraud.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Norman of filing a false auto insurance claim with Southern General Insurance Co., saying her 2007 Chevrolet had been stolen when it had been involved in a crash.

The offense occurred on May 2.
