North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will join Randolph County Sheriff Gregory J. Seabolt and state Sen. Dave Craven Friday morning, April 1, to discuss catalytic converter thefts.
The press conference will be held at 11 a.m. at the Randolph County Emergency Services Building, 760 New Century Drive, Asheboro, N.C. 27203.
Sheriff Seabolt will discuss a recent investigation into catalytic converter thefts which led to the arrest of four men. Sen. Craven will discuss a bill he sponsored that toughens penalties for those convicted of stealing catalytic converters. The bill was signed into law by Gov. Roy Cooper and took effect in December 2021.
Commissioner Causey will discuss the potential effect of catalytic converter thefts on automobile insurance premiums.
Catalytic converters contain three metals that make them effective at converting exhaust pollutants into less harmful gasses. Those three metals, platinum, palladium and rhodium, have skyrocketed in value in recent years.
