National TV Safety Day coincides with Super Bowl weekend One child dies every two weeks from a TV tip-over

Safe Kids NC is partnering with Safe Kids Worldwide and the Consumer Electronics Association to promote National TV Safety Day as a means of preventing childhood deaths and injuries because of televisions that tip over. As families prepare for this weekend’s television extravaganza, National TV Safety Day raises awareness about television tip-overs and educates parents and caregivers on the simple things they can do to make their homes safe.

According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, one child dies every two weeks in the United States from a TV, piece of furniture or an appliance tipping over and falling on them. Many children are rushed to the emergency room for injuries caused by televisions that are not appropriately secured.

“We don’t want any parent to endure a loss or injury of a child due to a TV tip-over,” said N.C. Commissioner of Insurance Mike Causey. “National TV Safety Day is a time for families to conduct a quick TV safety check and learn what to do with TVs or furniture that can be dangerous for young kids.”

Many TV tip-overs are the result of unsteady TVs that are not secured to the wall. Flat screen TVs that are top-heavy with narrow bases can be easily pulled off an entertainment center or table. Large and heavy TVs that are placed on dressers or high furniture can also tip-over if children climb the drawers to reach a remote control, a video game or anything else that attracts their attention.

Safe Kids NC recommends the following safety tips to ensure your Super Bowl weekend is free from a TV tip-over injury:

  • Check Your TV. Assess the stability of the TVs in your home. Remember, a curious, determined child can topple a TV. Children playing with friends or pets could knock a TV over, while other kids might be tempted to climb up to reach items placed on or near a TV, such as remote controls or candy.
  • Secure Your TV. Securing your TV to the wall is a safe solution. Much like child- proofing with a toddler gate or electrical socket cover, TV mounts and furniture straps are necessary precautions for keeping your family safe.
