North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Athenia Renee Singletary, 52, of 149 Sweetgum Court, Raeford, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.
Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Singletary of making a false statement to Nationwide General Insurance Co. in an attempt to collect on an automobile insurance claim.
According to the criminal summons, Singletary filed a fraudulent claim regarding how the accident occurred and added a witness who was not at the scene of the accident.
The offense occurred on Nov. 1, 2021.
“Property and casualty insurance fraud costs insurance customers an estimated $120 billion a year in increased premiums,” said Commissioner Causey. “The Department of Insurance has beefed up its fraud-fighting staff in an effort to make more arrests to keep fraud from driving up insurance costs.”
