Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announces the appointment of A. John Hoomani to serve in the role of chief operating officer for the North Carolina Department of Insurance. The appointment is effective as of Jan. 1, 2024.

“I am proud to appoint John to this role, as he is a highly experienced public servant who is a great asset to the department and the state,” Commissioner Causey said. “I have the upmost confidence in John and know that he will continue an excellent record of service in the years ahead.”

A native of Raleigh, Hoomani graduated from N.C. State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and received his law degree from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.

Hoomani recently served as the N.C. Department of Insurance's general counsel, a position he held since January 2017. Previously he work in various legal positions during his 20-year career in N.C. state government, including as chief counsel for the N.C. Department of Commerce and general counsel for the N.C. Department of Labor.
Hoomani replaces previous COO Mark Tyler, who retired with over 30 years of dedicated state service. Tyler was heavily involved in leadership and operational roles with the Departments of Transportation and Public Safety before he joined DOI in December 2014.

“We’d like to thank Mark for his remarkable career of service to both the state and to DOI,” Commissioner Causey said. “We wish him the very best in the next chapter of his life.”

Tyler will receive the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for years of service during a special ceremony next week.
