Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that the N.C. Department of Insurance has settled a dwelling rate case with North Carolina insurance companies.Commissioner Causey negotiated an average statewide increase of 5% per year over the next two years. The N.C. Rate Bureau, which is not a part of the N.C. Department of Insurance and represents property and casualty insurance companies writing premiums in North Carolina, had requested a statewide overall increase of 68.3% over a two-year period. The Rate Bureau filed its requested increase on Oct. 30, 2025.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey joined other traffic safety advocates Tuesday afternoon to highlight the dangers of distracted driving at a news conference at Pearl Street Park in Charlotte. “You might think glancing at your phone for a few seconds isn’t a big deal while driving, but those few seconds can lead to a lifetime of consequences,” Commissioner Causey said.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has rescheduled the hearing for the insurance industry’s proposed statewide average 68.3% dwelling insurance rate increase to July 6. The hearing had been scheduled for May 4.“The Department of Insurance and the N.C. Rate Bureau have made progress in reaching a settlement,” Commissioner Causey said. “More time is needed to work out the details of a settlement.”
Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will join other traffic safety advocates to highlight the dangers of distracted driving at a news conference at Pearl Street Park in Charlotte on Tuesday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m.   April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration distracted driving was blamed for 3,208 deaths in 2024, the latest national statistics available.  Many experts believe those numbers are vastly underreported. 
Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will honor Mooresville Fire Chief Curt Deaton for his decades of dedicated service and leadership during an event Friday, March 27.  Commissioner Causey will present the Commissioner’s Award during the chief’s retirement celebration at 1p.m.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Arshana Aisha Young, 27, of 2637 Cherry St., Winston-Salem, and Vernell Patricia Wagner, 57, of 2841 Piedmont Circle, Winston-Salem.Young was charged with insurance fraud, attempting to obtain property by false pretense, forgery and uttering, all felonies. Wagner was charged with insurance fraud and aiding and abetting, both felonies.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of James Daryl Williams, 34, of 19805 N.C. 903, Robersonville. Williams was charged with insurance fraud, attempting to obtain property by false pretense, forgery and uttering, all felonies.Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Williams of filing a false insurance claim with Universal Property & Casualty Insurance Co.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey strongly urges all North Carolinians to be vigilant and take precautions as dangerous storms threaten much of the state.According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, most of North Carolina faces an increased risk of thunderstorms and tornadoes today, with a Level 4 (out of 5) Risk in the central part of the state, the highest in years.
