On the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene’s destructive path through the North Carolina mountains, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is calling for continued support of the communities affected by the disaster.
The storm hit North Carolina on Sept. 27, 2024. A total of 108 people in 22 counties perished due to its impact and effects, making it the deadliest storm in modern state history.
The current damage assessment is nearly $60 billion in losses from storm damage, making it also the costliest storm in state history.
Commissioner Causey expressed further support for the bipartisan group of state and federal elected officials working to provide further funding for Helene-impacted areas.
“On the one-year anniversary of Helene, we honor those we lost, praise the efforts of all who responded, applaud the progress we have made so far, and call for further support for the continued efforts to rebuild our communities,” Commissioner Causey said. “It is crucially important that, one year later, we do not forget our fellow North Carolinians who are continuing to pick up the pieces in this time of recovery. DOI stands ready to continue to assist those in need.”
