Commissioner Causey to present top award to Durham insurance agent

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey will present the Department’s top award to a longtime insurance agent during a visit to Durham on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

George Stevens, owner of George Stevens Insurance Agency Inc. in Durham, will receive the Order of the Guardian Award, the Department of Insurance’s highest honor, from Commissioner Causey.

Stevens, affectionately called “Mr. George” by his customers, has been an insurance agent since 1962. He started his career with North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. and served multiple roles with the company for 32 years.

In November 1995, Stevens retired from NC Mutual and opened the George Stevens Insurance Agency. Stevens’ co-workers say he loves to encourage business owners to fulfill their dreams. Stevens has held many positions with community and religious organizations over the years but says being an insurance agent is his favorite role.
