North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Carmella Lee Rivera, 24, 2213 Robin St., Fuquay Varina. Rivera was charged with felony insurance fraud and felony attempting to obtain property by false pretense.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Jan. 26, at Little Caesar’s Pizza at 1320 N. Main St, Fuquay Varina, where Rivera was employed. According to Rivera, a ceiling tile fell and hit her on the head, causing personal injury. Rivera subsequently reported a worker’s compensation claim to Employer Mutual Casualty Co.

As the N.C. Department of Insurance sets up an assistance center for those impacted by the April 15 tornado, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is warning survivors to beware of dishonest contractors trying to swindle them.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to those families that were victims of this tornado,” Commissioner Causey said. “We just want to make sure that people are not victimized twice by unscrupulous contractors coming in, taking advantage of them."

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the N.C. Department of Insurance has ended the legal dispute with the North Carolina Rate Bureau on its proposal for an 18.7 percent homeowners' insurance rate increase. Commissioner Causey has negotiated an almost 14 percent lower rate for an average 4.8 percent increase statewide.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today issued a statement regarding the arrest of a bail bond agent involved in a shooting in the parking lot of Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem last month:

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Charlene Barnes, 60, of 20-A N. Sussex Drive, Smithfield. Barnes was charged with one felony count of insurance fraud and one felony count of attempting to obtain property by a false pretense.

Barnes is accused of falsely reporting to Nationwide Insurance Co. that a loss occurred after she applied for and received a renters policy, when in fact the loss occurred two days before she applied for the policy.

An effort is underway in Congress to eliminate $47 million that goes to programs like North Carolina’s Seniors Health Insurance Information Program. Such an effort fits the old adage of being penny wise and pound foolish.

North Carolina’s SHIIP office gets about $1.4 million a year from the federal government, making up about 65 percent of the program’s budget. The remaining 35 percent comes from state sources.

N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is expanding the department’s criminal investigations division as part of his vision to eliminate insurance fraud in North Carolina.

On Friday, 15 new special agents were sworn - in by State Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jackson as officers to the NCDOI Fraud Control Group – nearly doubling the size of the existing team.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Danielle Nicole Green, 33, of 1403 River Road, Elizabeth City. Green was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Green of filing a claim for vandalism to a car that did not occur with National General Insurance Co. According to the arrest warrant, Green attempted to receive $961.01 from the insurance company.

The North Carolina Department of Insurance has released its 2019 end-of-year report for its Captive Insurance Program and the numbers show the state continues to be an attractive home for new captive insurance companies.
