In recognition of 2021 National Burn Awareness Week, which runs Feb. 7-13, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey reminds North Carolinians of the causes of burn injuries and the resources of burn care available.



Since families are spending more time at home, National Burn Awareness Week presents an opportunity to review some simple safety steps to prevent burn injuries at home, at work, and outdoors.



This year’s theme from the American Burn Association is Electrical Safety from Amps to Zap (A to Z).

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that two Charlotte men have been accused of staging a wreck involving a U-Haul truck in an attempt to collect on an insurance claim.



Darrius Donte Barber, 27, of 310 W. 28th St., Charlotte, and Reginald Alexander Murray Jr., 40, of 11238 Joe Morrison Lane, Charlotte, were both charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, all felonies.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has set Jan. 18, 2022, as the hearing date for the North Carolina Rate Bureau’s proposed 18.7% dwelling insurance rate increase.



“We are not in agreement with the Rate Bureau’s proposed increase filed in December,” Commissioner Causey said. “I want to make sure that the process is transparent and that consumers’ interests are protected while making sure our insurance companies remain healthy so they can pay claims.”

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Melvin of telling Progressive Insurance Co. that damage to her 2017 Dodge Journey occurred on Nov. 7, 2020, when it occurred before she took out the insurance policy.



The offense occurred on Nov. 9, 2020.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Jamie Michelle Barker, 32, of 295 Ed Alston Road, Warrenton. Barker is charged with insurance fraud, a felony.



According to the arrest warrant, Barker filed a claim with Progressive Insurance Co. on July 22, 2020, saying damage to her automobile was caused by vandalism. She filed another claim for the same damage, saying that it was caused by a collision with a deer on Oct. 18, 2020, the warrant says.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced that 2020 proved to be another highly successful year for the Department of Insurance’s captive insurance program.  The number of risk- bearing captive entities licensed or approved (including conditional licenses and approvals) since inception through year-end 2020 exceeded the 1000 milestone rising to 1,081.
