North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey urges residents to always be careful when around oxygen tanks and to never smoke when they’re nearby.

“Tragedy recently struck a Nash County family when a woman died while smoking a cigarette while using her oxygen tank,” said Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal. “Portable oxygen tanks have enhanced the quality of life for many with various medical conditions. But having oxygen in your home means you need to put extra safety rules into practice.”

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Lizbeth Cabrera Appleget, 30, of 109 Weaver St., Randleman. Appleget was charged with felony insurance fraud.

According to the arrest warrant, Appleget provided a fraudulent tow bill to Geico to support a claim that her auto was damaged after a policy was in effect. However, the damage to her vehicle occurred when she had no coverage on it, the warrant says.

The offense occurred between Dec. 14-26, 2018.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Calleigh Marie Grennier, 29, of 110 S. Lakeside Drive, Smithfield. Grennier was charged with felony insurance fraud

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Grennier of making a false and misleading statement regarding an auto insurance claim. According to the arrest warrant, Grennier falsely said she was not driving a car involved in an accident.

The offense occurred between July 4, 2018, and March 27, 2019.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Brendal Scott Epling, 30, of 220 Newbury Park Way, Apex. Epling was charged with felony insurance fraud.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Epling of falsely telling Progressive Casualty Insurance Co. that he and his two minor children were injured during an auto wreck, when none of the three were in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

The offense occurred between Nov. 3-26, 2018.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Jennifer Dawn Burris, 38, of 4098 Old Davis Road, Norwood, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense.

According to a criminal summons, Burris told Erie Insurance Co. that her wedding ring had been lost in an attempt to collect a $4,000 claim.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division say Burris admitted during the investigation that the reported loss was false.

A Georgia man faces felony charges after being accused of intentionally falling at the Wendy's fast food restaurant in Murphy last summer.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Cedric Shropshire, 42, of Calhoun, Ga. He is charged with felony insurance fraud.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Shropshire of trying to deceive Employers Mutual Casualty Insurance Co. by claiming he slipped on the restaurant's floor near the bathroom.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Kasia Alicia Taylor, 34, of 215 Zachary Lane, Hubert. Tayler was charged with felony insurance fraud.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Taylor of providing false information to America Bankers Insurance Co. of Florida in a renters' insurance claim for storm damage from Hurricane Florence, including receipts that were also going to be submitted to another insurance company in a claim.

The offense occurred on Sept. 12, 2018.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Lashandra Jean Humphrey, 34, of 665 Smith Road, Supply. Humphrey was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Humphrey of trying to obtain $2,000 from American Bankers Insurance Co. of Florida by presenting an altered estimate for damages on a homeowners' claim.

According to the arrest warrant, the offense occurred on Oct. 9, 2018.

As the hurricane season approaches June 1, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is using Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 5-11) to announce five town hall meetings this month to inform residents about disaster relief and the need to purchase flood insurance. There is a 30-day waiting period for flood insurance to take effect.

Dr. Michelle Osborne, Chief Deputy Commissioner, and Department of Insurance staff will conduct the town hall meetings.

RALEIGH – North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is using Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 5-11) to encourage North Carolinians to “be prepared” as we approach June 1, the official start of the 2019 hurricane season.

“Be prepared is a good motto adopted long ago by the Boy Scouts,” Commissioner Causey said. “Prepare your home in case a storm is approaching. Prepare to evacuate if local emergency officials deem it prudent. And be prepared by making sure you have enough – and the right kind – of insurance in case a storm damages your home.”
