Concord man charged with insurance fraud in renters’ policy claim

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Leon M. Lewis, 39, of 1614 Daley Circle, Concord, was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Lewis of falsely claiming to Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance that a toilet leak caused approximately $12,000 damage to his music recording equipment while his renters insurance policy was in effect.

According to the criminal summons, Lewis obtained the insurance policy after the damage occurred.

The offenses occurred between Oct. 1 and Oct. 18.

Special agents served Lewis with a criminal summons on Oct. 21.

“Insurance fraud hurts consumers,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20% of your insurance premium goes to cover the cost of fraud. That’s why I’m aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may report fraud anonymously by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840. Information is also available at www.ncdoi.gov.
