High Point woman charged with fraud in renters’ insurance claim

RALEIGH
Aug 16, 2022

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Kia Michelle Pair, 32, of 1340 Burton Ave., High Point. Pair was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Pair of obtaining $45,105.36 from State Farm Insurance Co. by presenting the company with fraudulent documents and photographs in a renters’ insurance claim.

According to the arrest warrant, Pair claimed a grease fire damaged her personal belongings at a home she was renting at 176 Laurel Drive, Thomasville. An investigation determined that no fire occurred, the warrant says.

The offenses occurred between Oct. 5, 2020, and Aug. 5, 2021.

Pair was arrested on June 21. She was given a $10,000 secured bond and is due in Davidson County District Court on Sept. 13.

Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud.

“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840.
