Randolph County woman charged with insurance fraud, false pretense

RALEIGH
Nov 23, 2022

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Cassie Ann Gibson, 36, of 420 Brewer St., Asheboro, was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Gibson of obtaining money from an automobile policy claim from Progressive Insurance by falsely telling the insurance company that a crash occurred after her policy had been reinstated on Oct. 9.

According to the criminal summons, the automobile crash occurred while there was a lapse in the insurance policy.

Gibson was served with a criminal summons on Nov. 22. She is due in Randolph County District Court on Dec. 19.

Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud.

“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840.
