Martin County man charged with two counts of insurance fraud

RALEIGH
Jun 9, 2025

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Daniel A. Cox, 41, of 8857 NC Hwy. 142, Oak City. Cox is charged with two counts of insurance fraud and two counts of attempting to obtain property by false pretense. All four charges are felonies.

According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Cox twice attempted to file duplicate claims with Progressive Insurance on his auto insurance policy. Agents charged him after he attempted to receive payment for claims he had previously filed for two separate auto accidents. The total value of the two claims was $1,268.63.

The incidents occurred on April 18, 2025, according to the warrant.

Cox was arrested on June 6 and released on a $2,500 unsecured bond. He appeared in Martin County District Court on June 9.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
