North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Joseph Eric Altman, 52, of 205 South Randolph Street, Rockingham. Altman is charged with one count of fraud, a felony.
According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Altman falsely verified an insurance form while acting as a notary. Agents collaborated with the N.C. Secretary of State’s Office on this case.
The incident occurred on August 20, 2024, according to the warrant.
Altman was arrested on June 10 and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. He is set to appear in Richmond County District Court on July 10.
“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
