North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Sara Peffer Bailey, 22, of 234 Raven Circle, Lexington. Bailey is charged with three counts of insurance fraud, two counts of obtaining property by false pretense and one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense. All six charges are felonies.
According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Bailey altered amounts on her pet bill in attempts to try to obtain over $3,700 in fraudulent payments from Nationwide on three separate occasions.
The incidents occurred on March 14, according to the warrant.
Jones was served a criminal summons on Aug. 20 and is set to appear in Davidson County District Court on Sept. 10.
“Insurance fraud hurts all North Carolinians,” Commissioner Causey said. “Insurance-related crimes can often touch many types of different situations, even pets in this case. I’m fighting back by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting these types of crimes.”
