Commissioner Causey issues statement on oceanfront houses after visiting Buxton

RALEIGH
Oct 21, 2025

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today issued the following statement on oceanfront homes after a visit to Buxton on Monday, October 20, 2025:

"It was my honor to meet with the residents of Buxton and Dare County today. It was an eye opener and shock to see first-hand the number of homes that have collapsed into the ocean, and the ones on the brink of collapse.

"This is an urgent crisis and should be concerning to every resident of North Carolina, due to the economic impact it has to our state, especially the Outer Banks.

"This is a complex issue that needs urgent focus from elected officials across multiple jurisdictions. I am urging our Congressional delegation to see what remedies we can employ to help the residents of the Outer Banks affected by this crisis. The loss of beachfront over the past few weeks has been astounding.

"I wish to thank Dare County Commissioners Mary Ellon Ballance and Rob Ross, as well as Dare County Manager Robert "Bob" Outten. I especially wish to thank Marcie Shoemaker and the Buxton Civic Association for inviting me and organizing this meeting. I will continue to do everything In my capacity to support the residents and advocate on their behalf for meaningful positive change."
