North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Latisha Michelle Rorie, 36, of 2801 Westbury Lake Drive, Charlotte, N.C. Rorie is charged with insurance fraud, a felony.According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Rorie provided a fictitious invoice to Liberty Mutual to try to obtain a payment from a renter’s insurance policy.The incident occurred on August 27, 2023, according to arrest warrants.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Demetra Bates Poag, 37, of 154 Charleys Creek Road, Tuckasegee, N.C. Poag is charged with insurance fraud, a felony.According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Poag, a licensed insurance agent, claimed she was in a car accident on May 15, 2024 when the accident actually occurred on May 12, 2024, while she was uninsured. The amount of the claim was for $4,314.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Kara Chantille Simmons, 41, of 315 Ann Baker Court, Charlotte. Simmons is charged with insurance fraud, a felony.According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Simmons presented misleading information to Dairyland Insurance Company by stating a deer had collided with her vehicle when in fact she had been deemed the responsible party in a rear end collision. The value of the claim was $1,143.
(UPDATE: On Dec. 11, 2024, David Barnes pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of making a false statement on an application for insurance benefits. He paid nearly $60,000 in restitution and was placed on 12 months probation. The felony charges were dismissed.)

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Christian Armando Villarroel, 29, of 4011 Ivystone Court, Charlotte, was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Villarroel of obtaining $14,377 from Progressive Premier Insurance Co. by misrepresenting the date of his automobile accident.

Little was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies. She was also charged with filing a false report to a police station, a misdemeanor.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today the arrest of Benjamin Paul Boyatt, 41, of 9882 Red Fox Run SE, Winnabow, NC. Boyatt was charged with insurance fraud, a felony.According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Boyatt told USAA Insurance that his vehicle had been stolen in a claim to try to receive payment. Agents later discovered it had not been stolen. According to the arrest warrant, the offense occurred on June 12, 2024.
