A partnership between the N.C. Department of Insurance and High Point University has led to the Department’s Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) earning a prestigious award.

The Council of State Governments Southern Office, also known as CSG South, presented the North Carolina SHIIP program with its highly sought-after State Transformation in Action Recognition (STAR) award during the CSG South 2022 Southern Legislative Conference held in Oklahoma City.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced that the hardship eligibility programs for policyholders of Colorado Bankers Life Insurance Company, Bankers Life Insurance Co. and Southland National Life Insurance Corp. have been expanded effective July 27.

In his role as rehabilitator of the three companies, Commissioner Causey has raised the maximum amount of liquid assets that an applicant may have to qualify for financial hardship payments from $25,000 to $50,000. 
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Kemeya Myesha Pittman, 37, of 1200 Stoneridge Lane, Rocky Mount. Pittman was charged with insurance fraud, attempting to obtain property by false pretense and altering a motor vehicle title, all felonies.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Shaquon Lashawn Burrus, 30, of 2375 Vineyard Drive, Winterville. Burrus was charged with seven counts of insurance fraud and seven counts of obtaining property by false pretense, all felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Burrus of obtaining $10,107.50 by filing false medical records to support accidental insurance claims with Aflac.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announces that Jackie Obusek has been named Chief Deputy Commissioner of the department, effective Aug 16.

“It is my honor to appoint Jackie to this highly deserving role,” Commissioner Causey said. “Throughout her career Jackie has demonstrated financial leadership and has represented the department across the state and nationally. We look forward to Jackie’s continued leadership with us.”
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Lakaiyaa Latrice Lyons, 29, of 112 Zinnia Court, Rocky Mount. Lyons was charged with felony insurance fraud.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Lyons of filing a false automobile insurance claim with Sentry Insurance by claiming another vehicle crashed into her 2008 Infiniti, causing her to lose control and drive into a ditch and other objects.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of James Alton Hoggard Jr., 22, of 1125 Mulberry St., Hassell. Hoggard was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies, along with a misdemeanor charge of making a false report to police.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Chief Deputy Commissioner Michelle Osborne will resign from her role at DOI on Aug 15.

Osborne has been named associate professor of management and chair of business administration at Campbell University’s Lundy-Fetterman School of Business, effective Aug. 16.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Khadija Tiera Legree, 31, of 7905 Water Way Drive Northwest, Concord. Legree was charged with felony insurance fraud.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Legree of telling Progressive Southeastern Insurance Co. that an automobile accident occurred after she took out her policy on July 9, 2021, when it occurred before she took out the policy.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of LaFarrah Naden Davidson, 30, of 1729 Foust Road, Greensboro. Davidson was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Davidson of obtaining $21,382.49 from State Farm Insurance by providing the insurance company with false and misleading documents in a renters’ insurance claim.
