Lincoln County man charged with insurance fraud after filing false hit and run claim

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Donald Edward Johnson Jr., 52, of 1896 St. James Church Road, Denver. Johnson is charged with one count of insurance fraud and one count of obtaining property by false pretense. Both charges are felonies.

According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Johnson reported to Peak Property and Casualty that his 2014 Buick LaCrosse was involved in a hit and run while it was parked, knowing that the damage to his vehicle had been caused in a prior accident.

The incident occurred on August 23, 2024, according to the warrant.

Johnson was arrested by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and released on a $20,000 unsecured bond. He is set to appear in Randolph County District Court on June 23.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
