North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of William James Grier, 39, of 4602 Waterford Knoll Dr., Charlotte. Grier is charged with one count of insurance fraud and one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense. Both charges are felonies.
According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Grier filed a property damage claim on his renter’s policy with Praetorian Insurance, which was later determined false. He substantiated this claim with multiple fictitious hotel receipts, collecting $1,214.78.
The incident occurred on March 25, 2024, according to the warrant.
Grier was arrested on July 12, 2024, and released on a secured bond of $5,000. He appeared in Mecklenburg County District Court on July 8.
“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
