North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the conviction of a former Johnston County volunteer fire chief, who was given probation and ordered to repay more than $23,000 he took after filing fraudulent insurance claims for fire department equipment.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Terrell Deon-Ellis Johnson, 41, of 4219 Waterford Valley Circle, Charlotte, was charged with felony attempting to obtain property by false pretense.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Johnson of obtaining an auto insurance policy from National General Insurance Co. the afternoon of Dec. 12, 2018, after his vehicle had been involved in an accident earlier that morning.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced that Madalena Carroll Nisi, 52, of 1443 Overbrook Lane, Denver, was charged with felony insurance fraud.

According to a criminal summons, Nisi’s vehicle was involved in a wreck on Nov. 30, 2018, at approximately 12:37 p.m. She called Geico at 12:50 p.m. that day to reinstate her lapsed coverage, the summons says.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division say Nisi then filed a claim with the insurance company, saying the wreck occurred at 1 p.m. on that date.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Jeneva Powell, 25, of 578 Island Creek Road, Castle Hayne. Powell was charged with felony insurance fraud.

Special Agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Powell of falsely reporting to Nationwide Insurance Co. the details of how damage occurred to her SUV when, in fact, the damage was the result of an argument between Powell and her boyfriend.

According to the arrest warrant, the offense occurred on Nov. 1, 2018.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is scheduled to discuss insurance legislation and regulation while attending two national meetings with insurance commissioners and state legislators from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in Austin, Texas, this week.

Commissioner Causey will attend the National Association of Insurance Commissioners from Dec. 7-10 and the National Council of Insurance Legislators from Dec. 10-13.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to AAA Carolinas, in 2018, 123 people died in North Carolina as a result of distracted driving.

To bring awareness to the dangers of distracted driving, N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has placed a demolished vehicle in which a teen was killed while texting in the front of the Albemarle Insurance Building at 325 N. Salisbury St. in Raleigh.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has announced he has settled with the N.C. Rate Bureau for an overall average rate increase of 1.6 percent on personal auto insurance.

The NCRB, which is not a part of the Department of Insurance and represents insurance companies writing policies in North Carolina, had requested an average 7.6 percent increase in a Feb. 1 filing.

As part of the settlement, the NCRB has agreed not to seek a further increase in rates until 2021.
"Last year, North Carolina's Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program volunteers saved senior citizens more than $63 million," Commissioner Causey said, as National Volunteer Week kicked off. "That's money that older North Carolinians, many of whom are on a fixed income, can use to spend as they see fit."

National Volunteer Week runs from April 7-13.

North Carolina now has more than 2 million Medicare beneficiaries. Last year, more than 970 SHIIP volunteers helped more than 90,000 Medicare beneficiaries with issues related to Medicare or long-term care.
