Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, remind Medicare beneficiaries about the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period in North Carolina.“Our health can change dramatically within a year’s time,” Commissioner Causey said. “If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, now is the right time to make sure you have the plan that best meets your needs.”
Presenting awards to a Cabarrus County fire department for saving lives and honoring Stanly County volunteers who help senior citizens navigate the Medicare maze will highlight a trip to the Southern Piedmont by Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Commissioner Causey, who is also the State Fire Marshal, will also meet with building inspectors and economic development leaders while visiting the two counties. The Office of State Fire Marshal oversees building inspectors in North Carolina.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey warns seniors to be on alert for Medicare insurance scams. Since Medicare Open Enrollment began Oct. 15, the N.C. Department of Insurance has been made aware of people going door-to-door offering free health insurance with extra benefits for vision, dental and life insurance. During the visit, the impersonator asks to see the resident’s current health insurance policy then states they could offer a better rate.

It is important for Medicare beneficiaries to take advantage of the Open Enrollment Period by contacting local Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselors to save money, improve coverage or both.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has announced the 2020 winners of the Seniors Health Insurance Information Program’s (SHIIP) statewide and regional awards for their outstanding work in providing free, unbiased counseling about Medicare and other health insurance issues to seniors in North Carolina.

SHIIP is a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance that offers free, objective information about Medicare, Medicare prescription drug coverage, Medicare Advantage, long-term care insurance and other health insurance issues.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey thanked the more than 900 Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) volunteers who counsel Medicare recipients and help them save money on their premiums and copayments.

Commissioner Causey used National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 19-25, as an opportunity to extend his gratitude to the volunteers.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have announced the changes to Medicare Parts A and B for 2018. Each year, Medicare costs are reexamined to determine if changes need to be made to deductibles, co-pays and out-of-pocket maximums.

SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, is available to Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers to help them understand how the coming changes will affect their coverage in 2018.

Part B – Medical Insurance
Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey and the staff of SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, remind Medicare beneficiaries the Medicare Open Enrollment Period is underway and the deadline for Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage Plans is Dec. 7th.
The Medicare enrollment period is now open and runs for the next seven weeks. Each year during the Open Enrollment Period, Medicare beneficiaries have the opportunity to compare and evaluate their current plan and make changes as necessary. By comparing plans during the Open Enrollment Period, Medicare beneficiaries can save money and ensure their 2018 plan is best suited to meet their needs.The Open Enrollment Period began Oct. 15 and all changes must be made by Dec. 7 to ensure coverage begins without interruption Jan. 1.
