License Name Change

Send written notification to Agent Services Division.

For individuals, the notification must include the previous and new name, national producer number (NPN), and the licensee's signature.   A copy of the marriage certificate, divorce decree, or other legal document showing the reason for the name change must be included.

For business entities, the notification must include the previous and new name, License number or FEIN and the Designated Responsible Licensed Producer's signature. A copy of the legal document showing the name change with the Secretary of State must be included.

Change My Address of Record

According to N.C.G.S. 58-2-69(b) " Every licensee must give written notification to the Commissioner of any change of the licensee's residential address within 10 business days after the licensee moves into their new residence. Effective 01/01/2010, every licensee must provide a valid e-mail address and give written notification to the Commissioner of any change to the licensee’s email address within 10 business days after the change. Failure to update residential address or e-mail within 10 business days must result in a $50.00 fee.

Licensees may change their residential or e-mail address by completing the Free E-mail and Address Update online contact information maintenance system through State Based Systems (SBS) available for North Carolina licensees. Licensees must provide current e-mail addresses because Agent Services Division sends important license notifications via e-mail.

License Cancellation Requests

Return the license(s) with a signed written request to cancel.

If you are unable to find your license(s), submit a statement requesting license cancellation.
The statement must be signed and should include:

  • Name
  • State
  • National producer number (NPN)
  • Which licenses you wish to have canceled. 

Agent Services Division accepts third-party license cancellations for company-sponsored licenses only.

Transfer Insurance License

Are you currently licensed in NC and moving to another state? Contact the state to which you are moving for instructions on how to apply for licensure there. You must cancel your resident NC license(s) to receive a resident license in a new state. Return the license(s) with a written request to cancel them. Be sure the request is signed. If you can not find your license(s), submit a signed notarized statement requesting license cancellation and state which licenses you wish canceled include your name and national producer number (NPN). Submit a written request to Agent Services Division, 1204 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1204. The request must include the agent's name, National Producer Number and return address.

Are you currently licensed in another state and moving to NC?

An individual who applies for an insurance producer license in this State who was before licensed for the same kinds of insurance in his or her home state is not required to complete any prelicensing education or examination per N.C.G.S. 58-33-32(d),. This exemption is only available if the application is received within 90 days after the applicant's previous home state license(s) are cancelled. ASD accepts the information on the Producer Database (PDB) maintained by the NAIC or affiliates or subsidiaries of the NAIC, indicating that the producer was licensed in good standing for the kind of insurance requested.

An applicant who meets the required criteria and has moved to North Carolina may apply using www.nipr.com or submit the NC-1 application along with $50.00 registration fee per line of authority to Agent Services Division, 1204 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1204.

Please note that in North Carolina, the Medicare Supplement/ Long-Term Care license is separate from the Life and Health license. If you had Medicare Supplement/Long-Term Care authority under your Life/Health license in your former home state, you may apply for this separate license when you apply for a Life/Health license within 90 days of cancellation of your previous home state license.
