Fortified Homes & Mitigation Credits

Certain mitigation credits (or discounts) may be available for qualifying homeowners insurance policies in North Carolina’s beach and coastal territories. The mitigation credits can provide premium discounts for wind and hail coverage on homes with qualifying construction features that help mitigate damage and insurance losses. Different credit levels are available depending on the home’s mitigation qualifications.

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is an independent, nonprofit, scientific research and communications. IBHS’s building safety research helps to create more resilient communities. IBHS created a program called FORTIFIED- a voluntary construction and re-roofing program designed to strengthen homes and commercial buildings against specific types of severe weather such as high winds, hail, hurricanes and tornadoes. The FORTIED program has specific requirements beyond what’s required by most building codes, that provide a high level of protection from storms. The FORTIFIED method involves an inspection and verification process ensuring your home is built or re-roofed correctly. Utilizing the FORTIFIED program could mean eligibility for mitigation credits from your homeowners insurance company.

To find out if your home could be eligible for discounts or mitigation credits, please contact your agent or insurance company.
